Valederra golf course St. George UtahThe Ledges Golf Course, now known as Valderra Golf Club at The Ledges, was created to surround what was hoped to be southern Utah’s premier neighborhood.  Fans of Entrada will object, of course, and claim that while The Ledges is a beautiful development, Entrada is the top upscale real estate in St. George.  We’ll let the home owners and real estate agents fight that battle.  What we care about on this site is how nice the golf courses are.

The Ledges, opened in 2006, is a golf course that can be fun for duffers of a wide range of skills.  The fairways are wide, which helps golfers that have a hard time hitting straight off the tees.  Iron play is critical at The Ledges as the typical course table-top greens are not forgiving.  A shot that misses it’s mark on one side or the other will typically have difficulty sticking on the green.  Many of the greens have large undulations resulting in limited, but varied pin placements.

Valederra Golf Course 15th hole

Most golfers consider the  320 Yard Par 4 #15 to be the Valderra course signature hole.  The #15 is short, but downhill.  Most golfers take a long iron off the tee towards a fair landing area. The shot isn’t as easy as it looks as it needs a forced carry of 175 yards from the tips, but not more than 250 yards.  Another forced carry is needed to land on the plateau-style putting green that is surrounded by desert red rock on the sides and back, with a deep ravine in the front.  The ravine can ruin your score on the hole as there isn’t a bail out area around the green.  The #15, therefore, is a fun risk/reward hole.

The back nine is where the “ledges” of this golf course really shine. Spectacular view after spectacular view will amaze you.

The Valderra 7,200-yard championship course is in the news jointly because of its amazing southern Utah landscape and also due to its high-quality, innovative design.  Matt Dye, the course designer, is part of a world-class design family that has been building beautiful, challenging golf courses all around the U.S. for generations.  Dye designed The Ledges masterpiece by integrating a state-of-the-art course into the magnificent grandeur of one of the most dramatic high desert outcroppings in the entire world.

With its demanding table top greens and extreme undulations, Valderra places a big premium on accurate approach shots to have any chance at birdie.

If you’re looking for lessons, Valderra Golf Club has a Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy on site.  As expected, the academy includes a nice teaching facility with a championship short game teaching area, 3 climate controlled teaching bays, precision video cameras, and swing/putting analysis software.
